Major Lynn Cassidy, a 49-year-old mother-of-two from Upavon in Wiltshire, has worked her way from a shopfloor girl in a NAAFI super- market to the head of operations in Afghanistan. ![]() Today the organisation is split into three groups – civilians serving in NAAFI canteens and shops, the Naval Canteen Service on board navy ships and the Expeditionary Forces Institutes (EFI), members of the Territorial Army specially trained to be able to work on the front line. W ith the emergence of the Cold War NAAFI found itself serving large numbers of troops stationed in West Germany and its presence there is still immense, now operating hyper-markets that sell everything from supermarket goods to fridges and washing machines. His medal continues to be held by NAAFI, which is still attempting to locate any immediate members of his family to receive it on his behalf. He had died in 1945 while attempting to rescue his sister from a house fire.
